Okay, so this story released by The Guardian really made me smile. I know it shouldn’t have. It was Oh So British Proper, and dealing with a serious subject. The article has a scary title: Are children getting more homophobic?
When have you heard an American child use “poof” as a slam against a gay person? Poof-Tah, was used a lot when I was living in London, but more as an endearing term for a flaming old man or something. Maybe it was the theatre crowd I hung around with?
Now, when I was growing up, it was “fag” or “faggot”. You remember that, right? In England, a fag is a cigarette. A faggot is a smoldering stick with one end glowing from being stuck in embers. Makes sense a cig would be a fag. “Have you got a fag?”, “Give us a fag” and “I am plum out of fags” is more common usage. So I had to chuckle that when people are called “gay” it’s the equivalent of calling us a ciggy.
Personally, I am pretty sure kids are as brutal as they always have been. It’s just that we pay more attention now to how they are focusing that energy. It’s like buying a car. You think you haven’t seen one quite that color, or maybe you have only noticed a handful of that model on the roads. Suddenly you own one, and see 20 on the way home, same make, same model, same color. True. Happened to me when we bought a Honda once.
And please, getting irate because a bad boy DJ called a ringtone gay? THREE YEARS AGO? What’s up with that? Meanwhile, we cry out against silly Sally Kern for calling homosexuality worse than terrorism. Let’s put it in perspective, shall we?
But the language of homophobia has also shifted. “There’s less use of the word ‘poof’ now compared with when I was a kid,” says Leach. “Now everyone and everything gets called gay.”
A survey of teachers by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers last month reported that “gay” is now the most common put-down used by pupils. Rights groups cite as a turning point the BBC’s decision to reject complaints against DJ Chris Moyles, who in July 2005 described a mobile phone ringtone as “gay” .
