Lucent Technologies announces industry's most comprehensive portfolio of
Voice over IP network solutions for enterprises
MURRAY HILL, N.J. - Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced
the industry's most comprehensive, reliable and flexible Voice over Internet
Protocol (VoIP) hardware and software products for enterprise customers.
This unique set of solutions allows customers the unprecedented ability
to manage and control their enterprise VoIP networks dynamically, Lucent
said.
"Lucent is raising the bar on Voice over IP by doing much more than
moving voice packets over IP networks," said Karyn Mashima, vice president
of enterprise networks at Lucent. "We are tapping into the power of voice
and data at a new level with VoIP products that meet a business' changing
priorities for high-quality, IP-smart communications. In addition, with
these new solutions, directory information can be rapidly integrated into
multiple voice and IP applications, making network management highly efficient
and cost-effective for IT managers."
This new package of software and hardware - collectively called Real
World VoIP NetworksSM - builds on nine existing Lucent voice,
IP application and data networking products, and on Lucent's market leadership
position in PBXs, call centers and messaging. These solutions offer customers
benefits such as reliable and high-performance voice calling, multivendor
networking and investment protection in their existing voice, data and
IP application products.
Novell®, Inc. will be one of the first companies to deploy Lucent's
voice and IP application solutions.
"Novell is deploying leading technologies within our organization to
integrate and streamline our business processes, especially those that
touch the customer," said Dr. Eric Schmidt, Chairman and CEO of Novell.
"Lucent offers Novell outstanding integration of voice and data services
and is fulfilling its promise to deliver end-to-end, feature-rich, directory-enabled
VoIP solutions."
Implementation Timeline 1999 and 2000
Lucent is delivering on its implementation of Real World VoIP Networks
products today and will continue this implementation through 2000. In 1999,
Lucent's enterprise VoIP products, such as DEFINITY® IP Solutions and
IP Exchange Systems, label voice flows using 802.1p, an extension of the
IEEE standard and other standards-based Quality of Service (QoS) parameters.
Real-time queuing allows Lucent's Cajun153; Campus switches to queue voice
flows as indicated by the VoIP applications and to prioritize these flows
based on RealNet™ Rules, Lucent's new policy management application for
multivendor environments that will allow managers to drive network behavior
that maps to business processes and needs.
Lucent is delivering voice capabilities through its Cajun Campus portfolio
of local area network switches today, enabling customers to make reliable,
seamless, end-to-end calls across multivendor networks. The Cajun Campus
switches, which have a non-blocking architecture and real-time queuing,
are engineered to carry VoIP calls, and can inspect and classify voice
packets at wire speed, which minimizes latency and speeds voice traffic.
"Lucent's voice over IP products and services are targeted at branch
offices or headquarters locations where IT managers need to cut their costs
dramatically and improve the efficiency of their IP networks," said Tom
Nolle, president of CIMI Corp., a market-research firm in Voorhees, N.J.
"In fact, Lucent's VoIP architecture is perfectly suited for organizations
requiring reliable data networking fabrics, such as Lucent's Cajun Campus
products." According to Nolle's Netwatcher October 1998 report, over 800,000
locations in the U.S. alone are looking for sophisticated enterprise VoIP
applications.
Beginning in the first half of 2000, Lucent will be delivering a directory-based
schema for all user information. This schema, built on existing work being
done in standards groups, will be utilized by all of Lucent's enterprise
applications, including the VoIP products. These applications can be deployed
using the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), a universal directory
services standard. Lucent's applications will leverage this common repository
of user information, allowing organizations to reduce costs, streamline
access to the network and deliver services to users based on Class of Service
and QoS parameters.
Also in the first half of 2000, Lucent will deliver multivendor VoIP
networking, seamlessly linking PBXs, gateways and data networking products
by implementing iNOW!™ (interoperability NOW!), an Internet Telephony interoperability
profile that uses the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) H.323
standard; QSIG (Q Signaling), a universal PBX signaling standard; and DiffServ,
a technique for tagging and classifying packets across IP networks.
Real World VoIP Networks Products
Lucent's Real World VoIP Networks products - the market-leading DEFINITY®
IP Solutions, IP Exchange Systems, MultiMedia Communications eXchange (MMCX),
CentreVu® Internet Solutions, INTUITY™ AUDIX® Multimedia Messaging
System and PacketStar™ Internet Telephony System (ITS) -- leverage Lucent's
traffic-smart™ networking™, voice-enabled Cajun Campus switches, RealNet
Rules Enterprise Policy Manager and QIP® Enterprise 5.0 IP address
management services software, by providing network managers with the tools
to improve the reliability and performance of their voice traffic -- combined

Lucent Provides Directory-Enabled Enterprise Voice and VoIP Offers
Starting this fall, Lucent will begin beta trials of its next-generation
directory-enabled tools that will simplify and enhance LDAP-enabled management
of the DEFINITY® Enterprise Communications Server, INTUITY AUDIX Multimedia
Messaging System and corporate networks.
These tools will utilize Lucent's real-time Directory Synchronization
Technology (DST) developed by Bell Labs. DST, combined with Novell Directory
Services® (NDS™) and directory gateway solutions from CCOM Information
Systems, will enhance information sharing, access and synchronization across
converged networks. Telecom and network managers can use these solutions
that provide the value-added applications of single sign-on, single point
of administration, QoS through RealNet Rules, network security and IP address
management via QIP. Managers will be able to save time and simplify execution
of moves, adds and changes.
Novell, which is promoting directory-enabled networking standards with
Lucent, will trial Lucent's next-generation directory-enabled enterprise
VoIP solutions with Novell Directory Services at its headquarters. Novell
will conduct the trial with the DEFINITY ECS and INTUITY AUDIX Multimedia
Messaging System.
Lucent will demonstrate its Real World VoIP Networking products at NetWorld+Interop
in Las Vegas, May 11-13, in booth number 4989. The company will showcase
how a simulated corporate office environment uses products such as DEFINITY
IP Solutions, IP Exchange Systems and INTUITY Message Manager, combined
with RealNet Rules and QIP, to make reliable voice calls over the Cajun
Campus network and dynamically reconfigure the network by applying rules
to the most critical voice applications in an organization.
Lucent's VoIP products are supported by Lucent NetCare® services,
providing the people and expertise as well as IP address management, directory
services, QOS, policy, and security services.
Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, N.J., designs, builds
and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications
systems and software, data networking systems, business telephone systems
and microelectronics components. Bell Labs is the research and development
arm for the company. Additional information about Lucent is available on
