Downloading Praat for Macintosh Downloading Praat for Macintosh 1. Downloading the Macintosh edition To download the latest version of the MacOS X edition of Praat, which runs on System 10.2 and higher (and on PowerPC as well as Intel processors), download the following disk image or StuffIt archive: praat5022_mac.dmg (April 27, 2008; 7.2 MB) praat5022_mac.sit (April 27, 2008; 5.0 MB) (if you have System 10.1, try Praat 4.1.13 of October 22, 2003; if you do not have MacOS X, download the MacOS 8 or 9 edition) If your web browser does not open the .dmg file, double-click it. You will see a disk icon called PraatDisk. When you open it you will see the program Praat or Praat.app. You can drag this to your Applications folder. If you cannot open the .dmg file, try opening the .sit file instead with StuffIt Expander (you can use any Expander version except 8.0). 2. How to start To start up the Praat program, just double-click it. If you use Praat for the first time, choose Intro from the Help menu. 3. Phonetic symbols To see phonetic characters on your screen, you have to install the Charis SIL and/or the Doulos SIL font, which were created by the Summer Institute of Linguistics. To see phonetic characters in your clipboard as well, you should also install the SIL Doulos IPA fonts (1993/1996 version). To install them, first download the archives: CharisSIL4.100.zip DoulosSIL4.100.zip silipa93.sit Then unpack the .zip and .sit files, if your web browser has not already done that. This will give you folders called CharisSIL4, DoulosSIL4, and/or SIL IPA93 Fonts. When you open these folders, you will see TrueType fonts such as CharisSILR.ttf, CharisSILB.ttf, CharisSILI.ttf, CharisSILBI.ttf, DoulosSILR.ttf, SILDoulos IPA93.fam™, SILManuscript IPA93.fam™, and/or SILSophia IPA93.fam™. Drag these fonts to the /Library/Fonts folder in the top folder on your hard disk, if you have write access to that folder. Alternatively, you could put the fonts in the Library/Fonts folder in your home folder, although other users of your computer cannot use them in that case. 4. Tuning Praat to your Macintosh Sounds are recorded into a buffer whose size you can set with "Sound recording preferences". The best way to produce pictures is to use "Write to EPS file..." in the Picture window; most word-processing programs can handle such EPS files, and they will print perfectly if you have a PostScript printer. You can convert EPS files to PDF with the program Preview that comes with your Mac (this program may be named differently on your computer depending on the language); word-processing programs accept such PDF files as pictures, and they will print reasonably even if you do not have a PostScript printer.
