This series contains serial publications of Mobil
Corporation and its predecessors, subsidiaries, divisions and departments. The
corporation distributed these titles primarily to employees, though the
corporation often sent its corporate-level magazines, such as the
Socony-Vacuum News (1935-1949) and later
Mobil World (1960-1999), to other select
constituencies, like shareholders and annuitants. These titles provided news on
recent business activities supplemented by features on various topics. Other
titles had a much smaller audience such as employees of a particular facility
(Brooklyn Refinery Bulletin, Torrance Topics) or, in the case of some foreign
operations, like Mobil Nigeria and Mobil New Zealand, the employees based in
these regions. In addition, dealers selling Mobil products received
publications like Mobil Dealer News (1949-1966)
and Mobil Happenings (1967-1992) to keep current
on new products and marketing strategies.
The corporations’ annual reports (1882-1998) are
included and also contain Vacuum Oil Company reports (1911-1930) pre-dating the
merger with Socony. Financial & Operating
Statistics (1950-1989) supplement the annual reports by providing more
detailed financial data.
Other major titles include Vacuum Oil Company’s
The Gargoyle (1919-1931) and Vacuum Oil News (1925-1931), Magnolia Petroleum
Company’s Magnolia Oil News (1915-1936) succeeded
by Magnolia News (1937-1959), General Petroleum
Corporation’s Doings in General (1925-1959),
Aramco World (1953-1999), a publication of the
Arabian-American Oil Company (now Saudi Aramco), and The
Compass (1920-1999), Mobil’s “magazine of the sea,” which focused on
many aspects of the shipping industry.
