Macy) is a man with problems, with mounting financial debts and no easy way he's a desperate man who'll try anything to get out of the jam he's in. Suddenly he hits upon a seemingly fool proof plan, why not hire a couple of guys to kidnap his wife, her rich father is sure to cough up the ransom which he could pocket and solve all his problems with. That's that plan, but things don't seem to work out that way, because Jerry hires the world's most disorganised kidnappers who manage to blow the job in a most spectacular way. Enter Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand), the local chief of police, as she begins to look into the strange events happening in her town she discovers that maybe Jerry knows more about his wife's disappearance than he's letting on. Part comedy part drama, Fargo bears the unmistakable mark of a film by the Coen Brothers, it's packed with interesting and original characters who all get caught up in the events around them, while the dialogue is as witty and engaging as ever.HMV DVD EditorIf you're not familiar with the work of the Coen Brothers, this would be a good place to start. One of their greatest achievements in filmmaking, others on their resume include "The Big Lebowski" and "Miller's Crossing". They can go from insanely hilarious, Lebowski, to intensely serious, Miller's Crossing. And "Fargo" is no exception to that talent. Jumping from out of the ordinary humour and wit, to earth shattering tense drama. However, as "dramatic" as Fargo allows itself to become it remains full of witty dialogue, and charmingly humorous performances from the likes of Frances McDormand (wife of one Coen brother), William H.Macy (in his signatory role, one he was born to play), and Steve Buscemi (firm favourite and friend of the Coens, appearing in several of their other projects).It's interesting how a film so, so dark, with such a sickening plot can make you laugh sooo much. Some of the funniest dialogue I have ever heard is present in this film. An interesting point is brought to our attention before the film gets underway, the revealing that the story you are about to witness is in fact based on real life events, almost makes you feel guilty for laughing so hard. Having said that, you will soon realise that many events depicted are merely an exaggeration of events that actually occurred. A big part of the films charm lies in its refusal to make up its mind, if it wants to be an outrageous comedy or a stylised crime drama. The Coens have once again populated their film with a slew of bizarre characters, with outstanding performances delivered by all, particularly the edgy William H.
