He recently retired as the Chairman of CEU’s Board, although he remains as Honorary Chairman. In order to show its appreciation for his extraordinary vision and generosity, the university is hosting this very special event. The highlight of the evening will be the handing over of a scroll with the names of all the university’s graduates (including the 2008 graduating class): nearly 7,000 in all. Budapest, June 20-22, 2008 4th CEU Graduate Conference in Social Sciences: Global Transformations: Integration, Transition, and Development, at Central European University. Website: www.gradconf.ceu.hu The aims of the conference are to encourage an interdisciplinary academic debate and to contribute to developing knowledge networks among peers in their respective fields of research. At the same time, we hope to connect different perspectives and approaches in order to produce high standard academic works. We encourage graduate students, young faculty and alumni to contribute with papers and participate in the proposed workshops and panels. Each panel will include approximately 4 papers. Call for Panel proposals: We particularly welcome panels proposed by scholars coming from different institutions. A panel can be proposed using the special panel form and should be accompanied by the titles and abstracts (maximum 300 words) of four/five papers included in the panel. The working language of the conference is English. Fee: There is no registration fee for qualified participants. Food and accommodation are provided by the organizers. Applicants can apply for a partial travel grant for the cheapest means of transportation. Those intending to apply for a travel grant should write a short letter of justification (up to 300 words). Future students could listen to the experiences of CEU alumni, and receive information about the academic programs and social life at the university. Kyiv, 14-15 April, 2008 CEU alumni gathered together in Kyiv on 14-15 April 2008, and joined the CEU recruitment events at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and the State University of Finance and International Trade in Kyiv. Alumni shared their experiences with future CEU students at the recruitment presentations, and spent a nice evening together at the CEU Kyiv Alumni Meeting. Budapest, March 15, 2008 The CEU Residence Center in cooperation with the Student Union, Student Life Office and Business School presented the INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL FESTIVAL FRIENDSHIP THROUGH CULTURE. Students and alumni formed international and multiethnic groups, prepared songs, dances, powerpoint photo presentations, etc. and performed in the Festival. The event ended with multinational Dinner prepared by students along with snacks & drinks provided by the residence center. New Orleans, January 4, 2008 Dear CEU Economics Alumni, The CEU Economics Department organized an informal get-together at the 2008 ASSA meetings in New Orleans. They met in the Audubon Room of the New Orleans Marriott. All graduates and friends of the CEU Economics Department were invited. CEU faculty members present included John Earle, Julius Horvath, Attila Ratfai, and Istvan Konya. Yerevan, December 27, 2007 On 29 December, 2007 the CEU Armenian Alumni Chapter got together to welcome 2008. The evening gathered the Alumni and friends at a recently opened and popular Club Karaoke 96 in Yerevan downtown, which offered a chance to cheer up, sing and dance. Alumni who came for New Year holidays to Armenia from overseas brought joy to the gathering. The Armenian Alumni wish all that the leap year 2008 adds up with another happy day. Sofia, December 27, 2007 CEU alumni in Bulgaria met for their traditional post-Christmas pre-New Year's Eve party in a Sofia downtown restaurant. Andreeva (SEES '99) and Zornitsa Stefanova (POLS '98) Yerevan, December 20, 2007 As the deadline for admission to CEU is approaching, on December 20, 2007 CEU Armenian Alumni Chapter closed its recruitment season by organizing a recruitment event at the Alma Mater of Armenia, Yerevan State University, jointly with the International Cooperation Administration of YSU. This one-day event was open to the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students of Yerevan State University and offered a variety of information on CEU and CEU Business School. Participants had a chance to talk more substantially with a group of Alumni from different departments of CEU. Individual CEU departmental packages were prepared on spot and handed to the interested students. Specific queries regarding the departments are taken by the Alumni Chapter Coordinator for referral to respective Alumni. According to the testimonies of several Armenian Alumni occupying teaching positions, this year has witnessed more interest towards CEU in contrast to other years. Bishkek, December 11, 2007 Fifteen CEU alumni living in Kyrgizstan had a chapter meeting organized by Svetlana Kulikova, POLS ('95). Together with socializing and discussing issues small and large, most of the alumni also donated for the Alumni Scholarship Fund 2007. Prague, December 5, 2007 Fascinating topic, business networking opportunities and gourmet buffet with drinks were all part of the last alumni event of the year in Prague - CEU Alumni & Friends Meeting in Prague Biennale, sponsored by “Accenture”! "Contemporary Art in Central and Eastern Europe - Global Outsiders evolving." Helena Kontova, the curator of Prague Biennale, connected CEU alumni with famous local artists, having exhibited their work at Prague Biennale this summer. They were talking about recent developments in Central European culture. The management consultancy “Accenture” supported the initial CEU Alumni Vision. Senior Managers Camellia Staykova and Nikos Kotupas had a chat with CEU alumni over recent business opportunities and project work. Budapest, October 31, 2007 CEU Student Union & CEU Residence and Conference Center organized a HALLOWEEN PARTY on October 31 at 9 pm in Budapest room at CEU Dormitory. Washington DC, October 22, 2007 Alumni living in the Washington DC area got together for a CEU DC Happy Hour on Monday, October 22, organized by Sarah Nedolast (USA, IRES '98). Eger, October 20, 2007 CEU Wine Appreciation Society invited all students and alumni to join them for an exciting wine tasting experience in Eger. Yerevan, October 19, 2007 Armenian Alumni Chapter opened its CEU student recruitment season in October 2007. For the second consecutive year, Armenian alumni, led by Aida Ghazaryan (LEGS '00), represented CEU at the biggest Education Fair organized annually in Armenia. This one-day (October 19, 2007) national event was open to the public and offered a variety of information on US and other countries' study opportunities. Participants had a chance to meet with representatives of the universities, alumni and several organizations that fund or administer exchange programs. Participants could also take part in panel discussions with returned graduates. This year more students were attracted to the CEU stand at the fair due to effective pre-event publicity and other recruitment events organized prior to the fair (for example, a CEU presentation at the Brusov University on October 13, 2007). Individual CEU departmental packages were prepared on the spot and handed to those who approached the CEU booth. A promotional movie on CEU (2006) was screened twice for a large audience. Short presentations and consultations on CEU in general, and on the departments, in particular, also took place throughout the fair. Some specific queries regarding the departments have been taken for referral to appropriate alumni. A short interview on CEU was given to a national radio reporter. Budapest, October 16, 2007 A film “An Inconvenient Truth” (2006, USA, 97 min, in English) screening was presented by the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy in the framework of the Environmental Film Series: Discussion followed with leading climate change expert and CEU alumna - member of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize winning United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Dr. Diana Ьrge-Vorsatz (Hungary, ENVS '92) is Professor at CEU Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy, Coordinating Lead Author at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and, Member of the United Nations' Special Expert Group on Climate Change. Budapest, October 13, 2007 More than 70 students, alumni and faculty joined us on Saturday 13 for the first, this season, Alumni Speaker Series event! We had a chance to talk to our prominent alumna, the former Minister of Justice of Romania and current Advisor to the Prime Minister of Macedonia, Monica Macovei (Romania, LEGS '93). She was back on campus to deliver a public lecture on "Fighting Political Corruption", and to meet current students and alumni for a special open session! Lively discussion about challenges of fighting corruption in a post-communist space, was complimented by a range of questions from students and alumni related to the career development and personal skills required to succeed in Non-Governmental Sector, International Organizations or the Government. Moscow, August 17, 2007 Alumni residing in and near Moscow got together for a meeting and had great fun. As most alumni were from the business sector, the business card exchange started from the very beginning. They started with a short introduction of themselves, and ended up drinking beer and chatting all around the table. Yerevan, August 16, 2007 On August 16, 2007 the Armenian Alumni Chapter held the traditional *Happy Hour*, which brought together three generations: old Alumni, newly graduated Alumni, prospective students, as well as the participants of the European Volunteer Service in Veszprem, Hungary. The venue was the first Jazzve coffeehouse opened in the city, a genuine Yerevan café yet at the same time a truly European place to have the best of time in a comfortable atmosphere. Fragrant Jazzve coffee, branded cookies, the “old kind” atmosphere, wide menu options… The gathering was a welcoming of the returned graduates and a pre-departure orientation for the newly accepted students. The students were extremely happy to receive useful information on the academic and social life while at CEU, get the contacts of people renting apartments and just friends and meet Alumni from earlier years and hear their stories and success achieved following the experiences at CEU! Seventh Annual CEU Alumni Leadership Forum - Budapest, June 6-8, 2007 The Seventh Annual CEU Alumni Leadership Forum took place in Budapest from June 6 to 8, 2007, to mark the 5th anniversary of the CEU Alumni & Friends Association. Alumni Reunion Gala Dinner 2007 - Budapest, June 8, 2007 The traditional CEU Alumni Reunion is a time for classmates to come together, share their CEU experience, and learn about the CEU of today. This year, the Alumni Reunion Gala Dinner was held on 8 June, 2007. And, of course, the reunion offered countless opportunities to reconnect with alumni returning for their reunion. Check the Alumni Reunion 2007 page for photos about the event. Vilnius, May 31, 2007 On 31st of May 2007 the Lithuanian CEU Alumni Chapter organized a meeting in Vilnius. Though very few alumni participated in the last meeting held in Vilnius, the meeting itself was very constructive and every participant was assigned certain task on how to develop CEU Alumni activities in Lithuania. The next meeting is planned in September (exact date, time place to be announced). Tallinn, May 24, 2007 On 24th of May 2007, the Estonian Alumni Chapter organized the Alumni Event in Tallinn, which consisted of two parts. First, there was a lecture by Peter Balazs, who is currently the Director of CEU-ENS. He spoke about the EU enlargement, the lecture took place in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia. After the lecture CEU graduates were invited to Hungarian Embassy for a reception. Alumni living in the area had a great time together enjoying nice chats and good drinks. Yerevan, April 20, 2007 On Friday night, April 20, 2007 the Armenian Alumni Chapter spent a *mid-spring Happy Hour* in “Berloga” (beer restaurant), an originally decorated place with timber floor, stone tiles on the walls- a very cozy place for a gathering. The social event brought together old Alumni, Alumni residing in Budapest, and applicants just accepted to CEU. The uniqueness of this gathering was that this year the prospective students had a chance to meet the Alumni almost two months earlier than usually. The warm atmosphere and stories of Alumni about the academic and social life in Budapest brought much excitement and motivation for the new group. They had a chance to meet the Alumni currently living in Budapest and Alumni of their prospective departments for further networking as well as got advice on many procedural and travel issues. This turned out to be a quite long and fun evening. Everybody was ready for the next traditional get-together once the fresh Alumni arrive from Budapest in summer! Kyiv, April 17-18, 2007 CEU alumni in Kyiv attended presentations on "Central European University: Next Step in Your Professional or Academic Career" by Serge Sych (Ukraine, IRES '97), and helped to answer questions from potential applicants. Donetsk, April 19, 2007 CEU alumni in Donetsk got together to attend presentations by Serge Sych (Ukraine, IRES '97), while getting informed about the latest news from CEU and helping to answer questions from potential applicants. Samara, March 30, 2007 On 30 March 2007 CEU alumni from Samara got together in a conference room of posh Renaissance Hotel. Elena Zhidkova (HIST '95) made a presentation about the CEU Alumni & Friends Association and its activities all over the world. The presentation included various information about the University as well, and it was of interest to many educationalists and several prospective students who listened to it. The reunion was not a secret gathering of the alumni only. The event took place with solid participation of many members of the Club of participants of the exchange programs sponsored by the US Government (the American Club). Some CEU alumni from Samara have taken part in the American programs as well and are members of both Samara clubs: the CEU Alumni & Friends Association and American Alumni Club. In addition, the meeting was open to anybody interested in the opportunities offered by the CEU. The reunion cordially welcomed Yulia Markushina and Elena Lugovaya. Since 1993 they were our "mamas" at the OSI-Samara whose encouragement and support during the application and pre-departure stages was very important for all of us. Even though the OSI-Samara does not exist any more, we have been staying in touch with Yulia and Elena who have always felt happy and proud about out achievements at the CEU. The CEU Alumni association and the American Club discussed coordinated events for the future. We are planning joint events during the EU-Russia summit in Samara in May, 2007 and several environmental actions.
